British phone number search — common questions

Is there a UK equivalent of the US Whitepages?

There is no longer a comprehensive UK-wide telephone directory. Subscriber-name look-up against an active number is restricted by data-protection law and not made available as a public service.
Ofcom — Numbering policy

Not for active numbers. The historical paper directory (BT Phone Book) was wound down in 2020. There is no current online directory of who currently owns each UK number, for two reasons: data-protection law (UK GDPR / DPA 2018) prohibits it, and number portability means there's no live 'current owner' record to publish.

Why does the search return the *original* provider, not the current one?

Because that's what's published. Ofcom records the Range Holder at allocation; once a number is in service the customer can port it. There is no public live 'current carrier' feed in 2026.

Can I search a UK number by name?

No public UK service offers a name-to-number directory for active subscribers. (Some companies sell B2B contact data, but that's lawful only when the recipient has opted in or there's a legitimate-interest case.) For B2C, treat name-to-number as private.

What about a reverse search by name + area?

If you're trying to find a specific person, the best free options are: their LinkedIn / Facebook / Twitter, the company they work for, their personal website, or a paid B2B directory if they're a business contact. Reverse phone search isn't the right tool for name-to-number.

British phone number search — for businesses

If you run a UK business and need to validate, cleanse or search large lists of UK numbers, the consumer lookup form isn't the right shape. Consider:

Bottom line

British phone number search is free public data + behavioural inference. The Ofcom data answers what the line *is*; the AI internet check answers what the line is *being used for*. Both on one page at the top of this site.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free British phone number search?

Yes — WhoCalledLookup is free, no signup, and combines the official Ofcom Numbering Data (refreshed weekly) with a live AI internet check that summarises any public web mentions of the number.

Can I search a UK phone number by name?

No public UK service offers a name-to-number directory for active subscribers — UK GDPR + DPA 2018 prohibit it. The historical paper BT Phone Book was wound down in 2020. For business contacts, paid B2B directories exist but require legitimate interest.

What is the best UK phone number search website?

Look for free, no-signup, sources cited (at minimum Ofcom Numbering Data with a refresh date), and an indexable per-number result page. WhoCalledLookup ticks all four — paste a number into the form on this homepage.

Does the search include UK mobile numbers?

Yes — UK mobile (07) numbers are allocated by Ofcom in the same weekly feed and the Range Holder is published. Paste any 07 number to see the originally allocated network.
