Tip: registering on TPS gave an immediate drop in cold calls

Did this 28 days ago and the cold-call volume dropped by 80% almost overnight. TPS is the Telephone Preference Service — registration is free and mandatory for legitimate UK marketers to honour under PECR.
It won't stop scam calls (those ignore TPS by definition) but it kills almost all legitimate cold-call lists. https://www.tpsonline.org.uk
Also registered for the Corporate TPS for my work number — same effect.

Big +1. The 28-day wait is real (the regulation gives marketers 28 days to update their lists), but once you're past it, the volume change is dramatic. Worth doing for elderly relatives too.
