Scam calls claiming to be EE, O2, Vodafone or Three

A caller says they're from your network and offers an early upgrade, a loyalty discount or a SIM replacement. They ask you to read out a one-time code or confirm account details, then use them to order a phone in your name or take over your number.

What it looks like

  • An unexpected call offering an early upgrade or a big discount
  • “We've sent you a code, please read it back to confirm”
  • A SIM swap or “network upgrade” you didn't ask for
  • A parcel arrives and the caller asks you to send it back to a different address
  • Calls from ordinary 07 mobile numbers

What the real organisations say

  • “we will never call, text or email you and ask for a one-time code, password, or other security information you've set up on your O2 account.”

  • “Three will never contact you and ask for your One-Time Passcode (OTP). Anyone asking is a fraudster.”

  • “Vodafone UK will never: • contact you to ask for your passwords or temporary passwords • ask you to read out a one-time access code”

  • “We will never ask for your personal information such as account details and passwords.”

What to do

  1. 1

Hang up and call your network

Use the number on your bill or in the app, and ask if the offer is real.

  2. 2

Never read out a one-time code

Every UK network says it won't ask for one. A code read to a caller can let them take over your account or number.

  3. 3

    Report the number to 7726

Text the number to 7726 (Vodafone and Three ask for CALL, a space, then the number). EE also takes phishing emails at phishing@ee.co.uk.

Phone-network scam calls: FAQs

Would O2, EE, Vodafone or Three call me about an upgrade?

Networks do make sales calls, but none will ask you to read out a one-time passcode or your password. O2, Three and Vodafone all say so explicitly. If in doubt, hang up and call the number on your bill.

They sent me a phone and asked me to post it back. Is that a scam?

Three warns about fraudsters posing as its staff offering fake phone deals and then asking victims to return the phone to a fake address. Contact your network directly before sending anything.

How do I report a scam call claiming to be my network?

Share the number in a text to 7726 (Vodafone and Three ask you to type CALL followed by the number), and tell your network.
