Missed call from 070 — is it safe to ring back?

070 looks like a mobile but it's not — see 070 personal-numbering scams. Calls to 070 can cost up to 50p per minute, and the classic wangiri pattern is: scammer dials, rings once, hangs up. Curious recipient calls back. The 070 plays a long hold message while the holder collects per-minute revenue share.

Do not call back unidentified 070 numbers. Look them up on this site first.

    Lost £18 to one of these in 2024 before I learned. The trick is that 070 reads as '07X' = mobile to most people. Missing the third digit is so easy.

    BT Call Protect lets you block 070 as a whole prefix on landlines. Worth setting up.
