Bank impersonation

Scam calls pretending to be from Halifax, Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, Monzo, NatWest, Santander and other UK banks. Always dial 159 if in doubt.

What to look for in this category

Bank-impersonation calls usually open with an urgent fraud-prevention script — “we’ve detected suspicious activity on your account” — and steer you toward moving money into a “safe account”. No UK bank will ever ask you to do that. They also won’t need your full password, your one-time-passcode, or your card’s CVV over the phone.

Tell-tale signs

  • Caller ID looks legitimate (often spoofed to match the number on the back of your card)
  • Pressure to act in minutes, not hours
  • Asks you to move funds to a “holding” or “safe” account
  • Asks you to install remote-access software (AnyDesk, TeamViewer, Quick Assist)
  • Tells you not to discuss the call with bank staff in branch

What to do right now

Hang up. Wait at least 30 seconds for the line to clear (older landlines can stay open even after the caller seemingly hangs up). Dial 159 — the UK’s Stop Scams switchboard — or call your bank using the number on the back of your card.

Where to report it

Report to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 (England, Wales, NI) or 101 (Police Scotland), and forward any associated SMS to 7726.

Guidance is general — not legal or financial advice. If you have lost money, contact your bank immediately and report to Action Fraud (or Police Scotland on 101).
