What to look for in this category
Tech-support scams (often opening with “your computer is sending error reports” or “Microsoft has detected a virus”) try to talk you through installing remote-access software so the scammer can rifle through your bank apps directly. Microsoft, Apple, BT and Sky never cold-call you to warn about device infections.
Tell-tale signs
- Mentions Microsoft, Apple, BT, Sky or your internet provider
- Asks you to open Event Viewer or visit a website to “prove” the infection
- Asks you to install AnyDesk, TeamViewer, Quick Assist or LogMeIn
- Asks you to type commands into a command prompt or Run dialog
- Asks for payment in Apple, Google Play or Steam vouchers
What to do right now
Hang up. If you already installed remote-access software, uninstall it immediately, power-cycle your router, and change any password you typed while they were on the call.
Where to report it
Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040, and report the impersonated brand directly (microsoft.com/reportascam, apple.com/uk/legal/intellectual-property/forms/phishing.html).
Guidance is general — not legal or financial advice. If you have lost money, contact your bank immediately and report to Action Fraud (or Police Scotland on 101).
